LA City Hall | Future of the Lawn

Now that the Occupy Los Angeles protests and camps have subsided, Los Angeles city officials are faced with an interesting decision.

Should the lawn be replanted with grass, or drought-tolerant native plants?

(Image via Michael Robinson Chavez, LA Times)

The two month long Occupy LA encampments took a significant toll on the lawn outside of City Hall. Now, city officials must decide the future of this 1.7 acre land of dirt.

On one hand, it is much easier to lay down a carpet of grass, and continue to regularly mow the lawn. Initially, the installation of native plants would be more expensive to implement and maintain.

On the other hand, the addition of native plants would be much less expensive in the long run. For example, the plants survive with less water, and do not need to be trimmed as often (if at all).

What’s the next issue?

As the lawn that surrounds the Los Angeles City Hall, this piece of land must also fulfill two requirements. As the site of many news conferences and ceremonies the area must be aesthetically pleasing. It must also be physically welcoming to the public.

California is home to more than 7,000 native species. A thorough list of California plants is available on the California Native Plant Society website. (If you are thinking about re-landscaping your office or home, check out this website beforehand!)

Do you want to see a City Hall surrounded by grass or native plants?

Voice your opinion:

Contact City Hall, or attend a meeting if it is open to the public.

Feel free to post your comments, thoughts, and suggestions!
